MITRE/CAASD Receives Two Best Paper Awards at ATM 2003 Conference

The FAA and Eurocontrol held the Air Traffic Management 2003 Research and Development Conference in Budapest, Hungary, June 23 through 27. The FAA places high priority on having a strong U.S. presence as a demonstration of world leadership in aviation. It is with special pride that we announce that the ATM 2003 committee chose seven MITRE/CAASD papers to be presented at the conference and that two of those were honored with Best Paper Awards.

A total of 70 papers, plus nine student-authored papers, were presented over the conference period. The papers were organized into eight tracks or focus areas as follows: safety, metrics and performance, decision support, airport management, traffic flow optimization, weather and environment, human factors, and air/ground cooperation.

The Best Paper Award winners are (the name of the presenter is underlined):

In the Decision Support track: "Human-In-The-Loop Evaluation of a Multi-Strategy Traffic Management Decision Support Capability." Craig Wanke, Norma Taber, Shane Miller, Celesta Ball, Lynne Fellman (paper 19).

In the Airport Management: "A Phased Approach To Increase Airport Capability Through Safe Reduction of Existing Wake Turbulence Constraints." Anand Mundra, Wayne Cooper, Benjamin Levy, Clark Lunsford, Art Smith, Jeff Tittsworth, Steven Lang [FAA] (paper 85).

The other five MITRE/CAASD papers presented at the conference are:

Safety:
"Commercial Aviation Accidents Before, After and During the Alaska Capstone Implementation of ADS-B, FIS-B, Terrain Situational Awareness and Expanded IFR Infrastructure." Worth Kirkman (paper 84).

Metrics and Performance:
"Dynamic Density and Complexity Metrics for Real-time TFM." Tony Masalonis, Michael Callaham, Craig Wanke (paper 86).

"Predictability and Uncertainty in Air Traffic Flow Management." Joshua Pepper, Kristine Mills, Len Wojcik (paper 45).

Decision Support:
"Initial Evaluation of URET Enhancements to Support TFM Flow Initiatives, Severe Weather Avoidance, and CPDLC." Dan Kirk, Rich Bolczak (paper 25). (Note: This final paper was a combination of separate papers originally submitted by Dan and Rich, and selected by the committee.)

Airport Management:
"Capacity Enhancements in IMC for Airports with Converging Configurations with Knowledge of Aircraft's Expected Final Approach Speeds: a Case Study." Anand Mundra, Carrie Bodoh, Dave Domino, Ahmed El-Sahragty, John Helleberg, Art Smith (paper 70).

The ATM 2003 Research and Development Conference was the latest in a series of FAA/EUROCOTROL-sponsored conferences that showcase major aviation reaseach and development activities being conducted in the United States and Europe. The overall objectives are to coordinate work being done on both sides of the Atlantic and to generate opportunities for future collaboration. More information and the conference proceedings are available on the ATM 2003 R&D Conference website.

You can read abstracts of the papers and download a PDF version from the Conference Presentations section of the mitrecaasd.org Library.
